Wayward

In the mid-2010s, Image Comics published Wayward, a supernatural action series that transplanted Japanese folklore and yokai mythology into a modern-day Tokyo high school setting. Artist Steve Cummings brought fluid, expressive linework to the book, grounding its teenage cast and their battles with ancient spirits. Over its initial six-issue arc, the series earned attention for its dense worldbuilding and cultural specificity, offering a fresh take on the superhero genre through the lens of Japanese myth.
