Chuck Patton
Chuck Patton is an American comics artist and animator best known for his run on DC Comics' *Justice League of America* during the 1980s. He was the primary artist for the controversial "Detroit era," when the team relocated to the Motor City and was rebuilt around a roster of younger, multicultural heroes. Working closely with writer Gerry Conway, Patton co-created the characters Gypsy and Vibe, and also redesigned Vixen and the Golden Age hero Steel, The Indestructible Man.
Born Francis Chuck Patton, his career in comics began in the early 1980s, and he remained active in the industry through 2023, with credits on over 60 issues. Beyond *Justice League*, his most frequent assignments included *The Vigilante*, *The Omega Men*, and the various *Teen Titans* titles, where his clean, dynamic linework and expressive figurework became a hallmark of the era. He also worked as an animator, contributing to television and film projects.
Patton's later career saw him shift primarily into animation, though he continued to draw for comics periodically. His contributions to the DC Universe—specifically the creation of Gypsy and Vibe—have endured, with both characters appearing in live-action adaptations. While he did not receive major industry awards, his work on the Detroit League remains a defining, if divisive, chapter in the team's history, and his collaborations with Conway are recognized for their attempt to diversify the superhero landscape.
