Gary Hallgren
1945–
Gary Hallgren, born October 28, 1945, is an American illustrator and underground cartoonist. He first made his mark in the early 1970s as a key figure in the underground comix scene, most notably as a contributor to the controversial *Air Pirates Funnies*. Hallgren’s clean, expressive linework and sharp visual humor also appeared in a wide range of mainstream publications, including *The New York Times*, *Men’s Health*, *The Wall Street Journal*, *Mad*, and *Entertainment Weekly*. His versatility as an artist, inker, colorist, and letterer is evident across his catalog, which spans from the surreal anthology *Bizarre Sex* to the all-ages humor of *Mort the Dead Teenager* and the European series *Pocketserien*. He also illustrated a comic adaptation of *The Tortoise and the Hare*. Hallgren’s career reflects a rare ability to move fluidly between counterculture comics and commercial illustration, maintaining a distinctive, approachable style throughout. His work remains a touchstone for fans of both underground comix and classic magazine cartooning.
