Ken Barr
1933–2016
Ken Barr was a Scottish painter and comic book artist, best known for his powerful, photo-realistic cover art for DC and Marvel Comics, as well as for science fiction and fantasy magazines. Born Kenneth Barr on 17 March 1933, he began his career in the 1960s, contributing to British war comics like *Commando* before crossing over to American publishers. His style, reminiscent of James Bama’s work, evolved into a crisp, highly detailed realism that brought a gritty, cinematic quality to his subjects. He is particularly remembered for his covers on *Doc Savage* magazine and for Marvel’s *The Rampaging Hulk* and *Conan the Barbarian*, where his painted heroes felt both mythic and tangible. Barr also contributed to DC’s *Night Walker* and the Yugoslavian *Eks almanah*. He worked steadily through the 1970s and 1980s, often collaborating with writers and editors who valued his ability to capture a scene’s drama with precision. Though he never sought the spotlight, his work influenced a generation of fantasy and horror artists. Ken Barr died on 25 March 2016, leaving behind a body of work that remains a benchmark for painted comic book covers.
