Born on 24 December 1969 in Scotland, Mark Millar established himself as one of the most commercially influential comic book writers of his generation. He broke through with a high-profile run on The Authority for DC Comics' Wildstorm imprint before becoming a fixture at Marvel, where his credits span X-Men, Fantastic Four, Wolverine, Marvel Knights Spider-Man, and the Ultimates line. Time magazine dubbed The Ultimates "the comic book of the decade," and the series was acknowledged as a significant inspiration for the 2012 Avengers film.
Millar's fingerprints are on two of Marvel's landmark event stories: Civil War (2006), which anchored a company-wide crossover and later shaped Captain America: Civil War, and the "Old Man Logan" Wolverine arc, which provided the backbone for the 2017 film Logan. His catalog also reflects early work in British comics, including 2000 AD, and runs on Swamp Thing and Superman Adventures.
Parallel to his work-for-hire career, Millar built the Millarworld publishing label around creator-owned titles — Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl with John Romita Jr., Wanted with J. G. Jones, Nemesis with Steve McNiven, The Secret Service with Dave Gibbons, and Jupiter's Legacy with Frank Quitely, among others. Several have been adapted into films, television series, and video games, with Millar serving as executive producer on each. In 2013, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to film and literature.
