Skrull Kill Krew #1
Skrull Kill Krew #1 marks the first appearance of Ryder, Moonstomp, Riot (Heidi Sladkin), and Dice (Rob Fortune) — an entirely new team of anti-heroes whose concept was audacious enough to mine decades-old Fantastic Four continuity (specifically the Skrull-cows first introduced in Fantastic Four #2, 1962) and reframe it as a darkly comic, mortality-driven vigilante story. Published under Marvel's short-lived Marvel Edge imprint, the series stood apart from the dominant mid-1990s superhero formula by casting a motorcycle-gang-style ensemble of doomed outsiders rather than costumed paragons, a structural choice that editor Tom Brevoort later described as genuinely unconventional for Marvel at the time. The concept proved durable: the Krew's foundational premise — humans infected by Skrull DNA who can detect and hunt shapeshifting infiltrators — was directly folded into the 2008 Marvel Universe-wide Secret Invasion crossover, giving this debut issue retroactive weight as the origin point for a team that Marvel continuity would eventually vindicate. It also represents a key early American collaboration between Grant Morrison and Mark Millar before either writer became a defining force in mainstream superhero comics.

The series originated when British writers Grant Morrison and Mark Millar faxed Marvel's offices soliciting work, landing with Tom Brevoort — then a junior editor — who recalled having little leverage to secure established characters and so pushed to develop something new. The conceptual spark was the UK's mid-1990s mad cow disease panic, which Brevoort noted made it a short creative leap to imagine the long-forgotten Skrull-cows from Fantastic Four mythology entering the human food supply. Character design fell to Brendan McCarthy, while Steve Yeowell was brought in to pencil (the same creative division used on Morrison's British strip Zenith), reportedly because initial visualizations by Yeowell needed rethinking. The series was originally planned as an ongoing, but contraction in the American comics market and editorial upheaval at Marvel — including Tom DeFalco's departure as Editor-in-Chief — caused it to be scaled back to a five-issue miniseries; Brevoort lobbied for a fifth issue specifically to allow a proper conclusion to the four scripts already written. Even the name changed: the originally proposed 'Skrull Kill Kult' (a nod to the band My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult) was rejected by DeFalco, who felt 'Kult' read as an endorsement of murder cults.
Trivia · 10 facts
- First appearance of the Skrull Kill Krew team and founding members Ryder, Moonstomp, Dice (Rob Fortune), and Riot (Heidi Sladkin, unnamed in this issue) on Earth-616.
- Written by Grant Morrison and Mark Millar; pencils by Steve Yeowell; inks by Chris Ivy; colors by Chi Wang and Digital Chameleon; letters by Richard Starkings/Comicraft; edited by Tom Brevoort (editor-in-chief: Bobbie Chase).
- Published under Marvel's Marvel Edge imprint (September 1995 cover date; on-sale July 20, 1995) — a short-lived imprint running 1995–1996 that grouped Marvel's more adult-oriented titles alongside Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and Punisher.
- The series builds directly on Fantastic Four #2 (1962, Lee/Kirby), in which Reed Richards hypnotized Skrull spies into becoming cows — those same Skrulls entered the food supply and infected beef consumers with 'Skrullovoria-Induced Skrullophobia,' granting shapeshifting powers alongside a fatal, brain-destroying disease.
- The story's central high concept was inspired by the British BSE/mad cow disease scare of the mid-1990s, transplanting a real-world public health panic into Marvel's alien-invasion mythology.
- The title itself was a last-minute editorial change: the original name 'Skrull Kill Kult' — a reference to the band My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult — was rejected by then-Editor-in-Chief Tom DeFalco.
- Character designs were handled by artist Brendan McCarthy separately from penciler Steve Yeowell, mirroring the Morrison/Yeowell workflow on the British strip Zenith.
- The 1995 miniseries was first collected in trade paperback in 2006 (ISBN 978-0785121206); a comprehensive omnibus — Skrulls Must Die! The Complete Skrull Kill Krew — collecting both the 1995 and 2009 miniseries plus Secret Invasion tie-in issues was published in April 2015. A Panini UK omnibus edition followed in 2022.
- The Krew resurfaced in Avengers: The Initiative #16 as a Secret Invasion (2008) tie-in, then starred in a second five-issue miniseries (2009, written by Adam Felber) set during the Dark Reign era.
- In 2006, Marvel listed a live-action television adaptation of Skrull Kill Krew in development, but the project was shelved after the Blade TV series underperformed and all live-action TV initiatives were put on hold.
