Paul Mavrides
b. 1945
Paul Mavrides (born 1945) is an American artist whose work in underground comix is defined by a sharp, often darkly humorous critique of social and political dysfunction. He is best known for his collaboration with Gilbert Shelton on *The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers* from 1978 to 1992, where his contributions added new dimensions to the strip's political satire. Mavrides also worked as an artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on titles such as *Rip Off Comix*, *Anarchy Comics*, and *Young Lust*.
A founding member of the Church of the SubGenius, Mavrides co-authored *Revelation X: The "Bob" Apocryphon* (1994). His style blends detailed linework with a caustic, absurdist sensibility, earning him recognition for expanding the political comic's reach in the 1970s and '80s. Active from 1977 to 2023, his legacy endures through his incisive, unsettling yet playful catalog of human folly.
