Phil Gascoine
1934–2007
Phil Gascoine, born June 8, 1934, in the United Kingdom, was a British comics artist whose career spanned several decades. He passed away in August 2007. Gascoine is best remembered for his long-running work on girls' weekly *Jinty*, as well as *Bunty* and the war comic *Battle Action*, where he drew the strip *The Sarge*. His path into comics began in the post-war British industry, where he developed a clean, expressive style well-suited to both adventure and character-driven stories. He frequently collaborated with writers and editors on anthology titles, contributing to the look of *Commando*, *Blakes 7*, and *The Unknown Soldier*. Gascoine was a key artist on the series *Genetix* and *Codename: Genetix*, helping to shape their visual identity. Over his career, he was credited as artist, colorist, or inker on 92 issues, with his most active period running from 1976 onward. While major industry awards are not widely recorded for him, his consistent, reliable work made him a staple of British comics for decades. Gascoine's legacy lies in the many strips he illustrated for a generation of readers, particularly in the girls' and war genres, where his art helped define the look of those titles.
