Syd Hoff (September 4, 1912 – May 12, 2004) was an American cartoonist and children's book author, best known for his classic early reader *Danny and the Dinosaur*. His cartoons appeared in a wide range of genres, including advertising commissions for companies such as Eveready Batteries, Jell-O, and Ralston Cereal. Born in 1912, Hoff began his career contributing to publications like *The Saturday Evening Post*, *Judge*, and *Magasinet*. His work for comic books spanned from 1941 to 1959, with credits as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on titles such as *Tuffy* and *Dan Gillmor's Scoop*. He also created the syndicated newspaper strip *Tuffy*. Hoff's signature style combined simple, expressive linework with gentle humor, making his stories accessible to young readers. He collaborated with editors and publishers at major magazines and newspapers, though his most enduring partnership was with Harper & Row, which published *Danny and the Dinosaur* in 1958. The book became a staple of early literacy, introducing generations to the joys of reading. Later in life, Hoff continued to write and illustrate children's books, maintaining a steady output until his death in 2004. His legacy endures through the continued popularity of *Danny and the Dinosaur* and his influence on the early-reader genre.
