"Brimstone Bob and His Lightning Horse Quartette; or, Major Bragg's Ride to Tombstone" by Major E. L. St. Vrain is a Western adventure serial. Major Artemas Bragg, a one-legged former army officer, desperately needs transport from Digger's Delight to Tombstone, Arizona to prevent his brother's daughter Sarah from being defrauded of an inheritance by his nephew Miles Bland. When townspeople refuse due to Apache raids, nineteen-year-old local Robert "Brimstone Bob" Grover volunteers, providing a stage-coach and four black horses he calls his "Lightning Horse Quartette." The journey across the desert plains proves treacherous. After encountering survivors of an Apache attack, the travelers cross sand-hills where they spot Apache warriors approaching their position. Complications escalate when Bragg observes that one approaching rider appears to be white, suggesting double dealings in the situation.
