The Boy Lieutenant; or, The Red Clasped Hands

This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly (February 3, 1885) contains "The Pirates of the Lagoon," a serialized adventure narrative. A wealthy Mexican planter, Don Maceo Gonzalvo, travels the Gulf of Mexico aboard a comfortable merchant vessel with his beautiful daughter Amabel, a young naval officer Captain Luis Rosal (her betrothed despite her indifference), and crew. As evening falls and winds die, pirate boats attack. The defenders fire cannons, sinking two boats, but the remaining pirates board the carrera. Desperate combat ensues across the deck—clashing cutlasses, pistol fire, and hand-to-hand fighting. Outnumbered, Gonzalvo's crew is gradually forced backward. Amabel watches from the companionway, resolved to use her dagger rather than be captured, while her maid Tizi prays in terror below. The narrative emphasizes vivid action scenes and period maritime adventure conventions.
