# Museum Catalog Note
This Spanish-language science fiction pulp by Clark Carrados comprises two interconnected narratives. The main story follows Gary Locke, an unemployed spaceman with childlike features but exceptional strength, who accepts a dangerous position as second officer aboard Captain Fiodor Baume's ship Terpinia. Their secret mission: investigate the Schardanf Whirlwind, a mysterious space vortex that has destroyed seven starships without explanation. Witness testimony describes vessels caught in an inexplicable spiral and pulled into what may be an artificial rather than natural phenomenon. Baume plans a circuitous approach to attack it. Locke establishes discipline among the unruly pirate crew and secures quality provisions before departure, their first stop being Holwiger-IX station.
A parallel narrative introduces Tryna Slayter, an enslaved performer in a traveling show operated by the brutal Petunia Raggan and her violent partner Troy Davick, who use physical punishment to maintain control. Tryna attempts escape at Holwiger-IX station but is intercepted by Raggan, who threatens her with whipping if she disobeys.
