The subject selected is Jan Sharkot, a twenty-four-year-old Swedish man found in Rome contemplating suicide following romantic disappointment and his mother's death. Materialized in the Physiological Transplantation Laboratory of Olimpia, Jan encounters the elegant Dr. Nhill and learns he has been transported one hundred years forward. Wanda explains the experiment will last one year, during which invisible monitoring devices will record his mental responses—his "comparative mentalism"—as he experiences the transformed society. The narrative captures Jan's initial shock and bewilderment at advanced technology, including adaptive furniture and transport systems, while establishing the complex dynamic between observer and observed subject.
