Deadwood Dick Library, Vol. IV, No. 47

This issue of the Half-Dime Library (No. 47, January 31, 1900) contains a single serial titled "The Miner Sport; or, Sugar-Coated Sam's Claim," a Deadwood Dick episode by Edward L. Wheeler. The story is a western mining narrative set in Grim Gulch, Colorado, following the discovery of gold deposits. It opens with four prospectors—McDuff, Snapp, Hans, and the protagonist Sugar-Coated Sam—founding a town and establishing the Sugar-Coated Mining Company. Sam acts as president and town organizer, staking out fifty uniform lots. The narrative progresses with the arrival of an eccentric bullwhacker and self-proclaimed poet named William Henry Shakespeare, who rides in on a worn mule seeking shelter after fleeing Coffin Lid Camp, Arizona. Shakespeare announces plans to publish a newspaper and attempts to ingratiate himself with Sam. The issue also contains an extensive catalog listing numerous other Deadwood Dick, Jr. adventure titles published in the same series, ranging from issue numbers 443 to 1018, covering western mining camps, cities, and frontier pursuits.
