Chapter XIX of this serialized novel depicts Mr. Ryot-Tempest, an Anglican rector, implementing strict privacy measures over his correspondence after discovering his new wife opened his letters during his honeymoon absence. Upon returning to Paris, he learns his brother's letter about his daughter Vera's wished marriage to Captain Raleigh was burned by his wife "Poppy," who disapproves of the match on religious grounds. Ryot-Tempest installs a locked basket for parcels and refuses his wife a post-bag key.

Poppy subsequently reforms church practices—shortening his surplices and instituting daily services—though she neglects attending herself. When she forbids Vera from riding unescorted, Vera refuses to ride with the groom Mark Brown, whom she mistrusts. Ryot-Tempest, overwhelmed by his wife's influence, reluctantly agrees to compromise.
