The Argosy, Vol. 55

This January 1893 issue of The Argos begins with "The Engagement of Susan Chase," serialized fiction by Mrs. Henry Wood, author of East Lynne. The story follows eighteen-year-old Susan Chase and Lieutenant Charles Carnagie, a military officer visiting the neighborhood. After meeting and falling in love, Carnagie proposes before his regiment receives orders for deployment to the West Indies. Facing Mrs. Chase's objections to such an early marriage, Carnagie persuades both mother and daughter. The couple decides to marry before his departure in two months, though preparations begin hastily. On the eve of the wedding, Carnagie learns that Mrs. Chase has died suddenly from a chronic ailment. Susan, devastated, refuses to marry during her mourning period, thwarting their plans and leaving Carnagie facing separation and the West Indies posting alone.
