Stanley Downs and his chauffeur Karl, driving an Archimedes, encounter a young woman named Miss Ranvelt operating a runaway Fanchon automobile toward a lake. With brakes failing on a dangerous hairpin curve, Stanley performs a daring stunt—transferring driving duties to Karl mid-drive before leaping into the girl's car to seize the wheel. Both vehicles plunge into the fifty-foot lake. All three occupants survive, though Stanley bears a head wound. The issue also contains a continued Frank Merriwell, Jr. serial from Frank Merriwell's notebook (part two of a four-part story) and Trooper Stewart, Substitute by H. E.
