Prime displays a violent temper toward the horses, jerking their reins savagely and threatening the whip when they react naturally to a rattlesnake in the trail. When Chloe attempts to restrain him, Prime strikes her hand and continues his brutal treatment of the animals despite her protests. The narrative emphasizes his struggle to control an impulse toward cruelty that her father had warned him about beforehand. The piece concludes with Chloe traumatized after being thrown from the wagon during Prime's rage.
