This issue of World Fiction, edited by Harriet V. Wishnieff and Harald Toksvig, features an international collection of fiction and verse in translation. The lead story is "A Wedding Serenade" by Spanish author Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (translated by Arthur Livingston), set in the Valencian village of Benimuslin. It concerns the betrothal of the wealthy widower tío Sento to Marieta, a beautiful young woman of humble origin, causing scandal among villagers who view her as unworthy. Marieta's former suitor, the loafer Toni el Desgarrat ("Rags"), is encouraged by townspeople to disrupt the match. The issue includes stories from French, English, Italian, Danish, Russian, Portuguese, Dutch, Norwegian, and Rumanian sources, plus an American story by James Boyd ("The Flat Town") and verse by Albert Brush and M. M. Rakich.
