# Content Description

This issue features "Young Wild West's Cowboy Cavalry; or, Saving the Besieged Soldiers," credited to "An Old Scout." The adventure narrative finds the titular protagonist—a wealthy young deadshot and mine owner—encountering foreman Zack Taylor and fifteen cowboys from the Little X Ranch. The cowboys have been pressed into military service to rescue a detachment of twenty soldiers besieged in a canyon near Red Butte by approximately fifty white renegades and Mexicans led by the notorious outlaw Deadly Jack. With only day-long rations remaining, the soldiers face starvation or slaughter. Young Wild West agrees to lead the rescue mission, accompanied by his sweetheart Arietta Murdock, scout Cheyenne Charlie and his wife Anna, Jim Dart and his sweetheart Eloise Gardner, and servants Hop Wah and Wing Wah. A comedic subplot involves Hop discovering the wagon's African American driver Murphy while searching for whisky, causing confusion and near-confrontation before resolution.
