Angus was sitting upon it, one leg cut, and the other still stretched upon it. One of his arms was passed round Rio Santo’s neck, which he pressed with aljl his might; with the other hand he continually kept striking him. The marquis _ made every effort to retain him in that position, because he foresaw, that should the laird’s foot once touch the floor, he would have a firmer sup- port, and his assault would thon Rio-Santo was a robust man, and his desperate situation for a time renewed his native vigour, which had been exhausted by six days of cruel trial. He succeeded in throwing the laird back upon his pillow, and thought the crisisover. The laird, in fact, remained quiet for some moments 3 but at.the iastant Rio Santo was recovering his breath, Angus suddenly started up, seized his throat = both hands, and strangied him, utter- ing a shout of savage triumph. All was over with the marquis—his arms fell lifeless, to his side. He could neither bei himself, nor cry for help.
