OF LONDON. 301 have perceived a vague, undecided continued noise which appsared to proceed from the parti- tion to the right of the portrait. It sounded like the attempt of soMe inexperienced hand endea-~ vouring’-to puta kéy into alock. But the parti- tion on that side did not give any indications of a door. The noise, however, continued, and still appeared to proceed frem such a cause. At length the bolt flew back, and about a minuts afterward a pannel slowly opened. Behind it was the pale face of Doctor Moore. It was more wan than usual, and he appeared alarmed at the dane indiscretion he was committing. This indiscretion, moreover, had not any very decisive result; for at the moment that he was advancing his head beyond the panel, the noise of footsteps was heard on the opposite side of the room. Thedcector gently closed the wainscot- ing, showing, by a significative shake of his head, the disappointment he experienced at not being able to gratify his curiosity. An instant afterward, the chevalier Bembo rushed into the room, followed by Lovely. The dog bounded toward the panel which. had just closed, and barked loudly, then ran toward the body of its master, and howled piteously, , * CHAPTER II.
