A rising young footballer known as “El Gallo” Peña reflects on his lifelong superstition—his “cábala”—a street shoe shiner whom he believes brings him luck before every important match. As his career ascends toward fame, glory, and wealth, he continues relying on this ritual. On the eve of a championship final, he discovers the old man has died. During the decisive penalty kick, he realizes his success never depended on superstition—but tragedy strikes when a thrown shoe-shine stool fatally injures him. The story closes with a televised report confirming his death amid stadium violence.
