“Fables of the Reconstruction”

In "Fables of the Reconstruction," Jimmy Gownley crafts a quietly powerful chapter in the Amelia Rules! series, where long-standing tensions thaw as Amelia and Ira find common ground. With Rhonda’s bold bluff and a dramatic helicopter crash in a war zone that stuns the whole group, the kids confront fear and solidarity in equal measure—especially when Captain Driscoll is found alive and returns home, and Tanner begins mending her bond with Amelia ahead of the town’s bicentennial. A heartfelt, character-driven story drawn and lettered by Gownley, this issue captures the fragile, hopeful rhythm of growing up.

Amelia and Ira reconcile. By threatening to quit, Rhonda bluffs Principal Wright into reinstating Amelia on the cheerleading squad. When Captain Driscoll's helicopter crashes in a war zone, the kids are not only horrified, but also terrified of being with Joan. They all go to her side anyway, and he is finally found alive. Tanner returns to sing for the town's bicentennial celebration, and begins rebuilding her relationship with Amelia. Captain Driscoll, although badly injured, returns home.
