Archie's Pals 'n' Gals Double Digest Magazine #75
In "Brain Drain," Valerie’s sudden departure before a big Pussycats gig sparks suspicion — her excuse of visiting a sick grandmother rings hollow to Josie, Melody, and Alexandra, who step in to fill in. When the girls discover the club they’re playing at is owned by someone who once pursued Valerie, their curiosity turns to concern, hinting at a deeper, unspoken reason behind her absence. Written by Frank Doyle and illustrated by Stan Goldberg, with inks by Jon D'Agostino, colors by Barry Grossman, and letters by Bill Yoshida, this Double Digest story unfolds with the signature charm and playful mystery of the Archie universe, all capped by a cover by Stan Goldberg and Jon D'Agostino.

Valerie leaves town before an important gig, claiming that she needs to visit a sick grandmother. Josie, Melody and Alexandra (who replaces Valerie in the band while she's away) don't buy the old "sick grandmother" cliché, and assume that Valerie is making some kind of tragic sacrifice to help the Pussycats. And they think they know what it is when they realize that the club they're playing at is owned by someone who unsuccessfully hit on Val.
