"Uncle Awful Boar," by Don Arr, depicts a mail carrier pig's distress upon learning that his visiting Uncle Awful—a crude boar from the wild side of the family—will be arriving and staying indefinitely. A separate story follows a chicken character who discovers catnip and devises a scheme to lure a cat out of the house using the catnip, planning to drive the cat away for good by taking her on a journey.
A young squirrel sets out to win the nut-gathering championship by finding the biggest haul possible, only to discover a barrel of what he believes are the prize-winning nuts down by the railroad tracks. But as he hauls his prize home—rolling it across railroad crossings and down hillsides in increasingly chaotic fashion—he may just find out that things aren't always what their labels claim to be.
Two mischievous rats discover a box of catnip in the kitchen cupboard and hatch a scheme to lure their feline nemesis out of the house for good by laying a trail of the irresistible stuff leading next door. Things don't go quite as planned when they discover that every trail, as the saying goes, leads two ways.
