Batgirl #1
This collection kicks off the Rebirth era for Barbara Gordon, picking up after the events of the 'Burnside' run. It sees Batgirl returning to her hometown of Burnside, only to find a new threat emerging that forces her to confront her past and redefine her role as a hero. Written by Hope Larson with art by Rafael Albuquerque, this volume collects Batgirl #1-6.
In "Beyond Burnside, Part One," Barbara Gordon—still navigating her path after a long recovery—finds herself in Okinawa, where an unexpected reunion with old friend Kai Ma leads her to the legendary 104-year-old superhero Chiyo Yamashiro, aka Fruit Bat. When a mysterious kabuki-faced schoolgirl attacks Kai, Fruit Bat intervenes with surprising speed, leaving Barbara with a cryptic message and a new mission: travel to a martial arts tournament in Singapore. Written by Hope Larson and brought to life with striking visuals by Rafael Albuquerque—both interior and cover—and colored by Dave McCaig, this issue blends quiet introspection with kinetic energy, setting a compelling tone for Barbara’s next chapter.
In "Beyond Burnside, Part One," Barbara Gordon finds herself in Okinawa, reconnecting with her old friend Kai Ma while chasing a lead on the legendary 104-year-old superhero Chiyo Yamashiro, known as Fruit Bat. After meeting Chiyo at a parade, Barbara is drawn into a sudden clash with a mysterious kabuki-faced schoolgirl who attacks Kai and demands a forgotten formula—only for Fruit Bat to intervene and vanish as quickly as she appeared. Inspired by Chiyo’s cryptic words, Barbara sets her sights on a martial arts tournament in Singapore, setting her on a new path.
In Singapore, Barbara sharpens her skills at the gym ahead of a high-stakes exhibition fight against the formidable Wen Lu. When a familiar tattoo on Wen Lu’s arm triggers a flash of memory from a past encounter in Okinawa, Barbara’s focus falters—just long enough to be knocked out. Back in the city, her growing connection with Kai deepens with a tender kiss, but as his attention becomes more intense, she can’t shake the feeling that something is shifting beneath the surface.
In "Beyond Burnside, Part Three," Batgirl tracks Wen Lu, the mysterious moth-costumed assailant, from Gotham to Seoul, where she confronts both Wen Lu and another martial arts student—only to learn their teacher has vanished to Shanghai, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions.
In "Beyond Burnside, Part Four," Batgirl tracks a dangerous intelligence-enhancing formula to Shanghai, uncovering its dark use on struggling students. When she confronts the source, Teacher, the formula’s effects turn her into a feral, relentless foe—forcing Batgirl into a brutal fight she didn’t expect.
In "Beyond Burnside, Finale," Batgirl faces off against Teacher, whose newfound powers stem from the mysterious formula, using guidance from a dream shared with Fruit Bat and Kai. After a tense confrontation, she secures a truce with Grandfather Blood by handing over Teacher, trading her freedom for Kai’s safety. As Batgirl reflects on her journey through East Asia, a sudden call from Frankie cuts through the silence—something urgent, something new.
