Mike Mignola's stark, high-contrast cover for this 2003 anthology volume says everything with almost nothing — Batman rendered in bold blacks and whites, a looming silhouette of cape and cowl anchored by a scatter of bat-symbols at his feet. It's a fittingly elemental image for a collection that strips the Dark Knight down to pure graphic storytelling, and inside, Paul Dini and Alex Ross bring their considerable talents to "Case Study." A compelling package for anyone who appreciates Batman at his most atmospheric.
