Paul Dini

Paul McClaran Dini, born August 7, 1957, is an American writer, animator, and producer whose influence on DC Comics storytelling spans both animation and print. He is perhaps best known as one of the architects of Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1995) and the broader DC Animated Universe that followed, a body of work that shaped how an entire generation understood these characters.

Dini's path into animation began at Filmation, writing for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in 1983–1984, before moving to Warner Bros. Animation on Tiny Toon Adventures and then the projects that would define his career. Alongside frequent collaborator Bruce Timm, he co-created two enduring characters: Harley Quinn and Terry McGinnis. Together, Dini and Timm also co-created Freakazoid! and worked on The New Batman Adventures and Batman Beyond. Their collaboration on the comic Batman Adventures: Mad Love earned the Eisner Award for Best Single Story in 1994.

In print, Dini partnered with illustrator Alex Ross on a series of oversized graphic novels pairing iconic DC heroes — Superman, Batman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman — with humanistic, grounded stories. He also contributed storylines for the acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City video games. His credited DC Comics work spans titles including Detective Comics, Gotham City Sirens, Batman: Streets of Gotham, and Zatanna. His original creations include Jingle Belle, Sheriff Ida Red, and Madame Mirage.
