“1: [This is a Bullet]”

In "1: [This is a Bullet]," J. Michael Straczynski and Tommy Lee Edwards reimagine history with a bold twist: without Dr. Erskine and Ben Parker, Steve Rogers becomes a living weapon wired to a war machine—Iron Man, the hero of World War II. Meanwhile, in the New Mexico desert, a reckless Peter Parker stumbles upon a military test site and is caught in a gamma explosion, setting a new course for his future. The story unfolds with stark, cinematic intensity, all rendered in bold, textured art by Tommy Lee Edwards, whose work defines the issue’s gritty, high-stakes atmosphere.

In this "what if" style story, Dr. Erskine and the young soldier protecting him, Ben Parker, are killed by a spy on the day before Project Rebirth was to go into effect. 4F volunteer for the program, Steve Rogers, instead has his heart permanently wired to a device that controls a formidable suit of armor and becomes the Iron Man, hero of World War II. Young hooligan Peter Parker and his friends steal a car and ride out into the New Mexico desert where they run out of gas. Young Parker accidentally finds himself on a military testing site and gets caught in the detonation of a gamma bomb.
