Jenny avait vécu en Nouvelle-Zélande jusqu'à la mort de sa mère et de son père lorsque son grand-père l'a envoyée pour venir vivre avec lui et son cousin à Cholm Hall. Jenny rencontre David sur le chemin, mais quand elle mentionne son nom avec désinvolture, son grand-père dit qu'il ne fera pas mentionner son nom dans sa maison et lui interdit de lui parler. Elle voit quand même David et découvre qu'il est musicien. Il écrit une nouvelle chanson pour une comédie musicale et l'appelle "l'air de Jennny".
