Sean Phillips's rain-soaked cover sets the tone perfectly for this 2009 noir gem from Ed Brubaker and Phillips's Criminal series — a solitary, broad-shouldered figure in a dark coat stands with his back to us, while a small group gathers under umbrellas at what looks like a graveside scene in the murky distance. The deep crimsons and muted purples give the whole image a bruised, melancholy atmosphere that noir fans will find hard to resist.
