Born on 27 January 1965, Sean Phillips is a British comic book artist whose career spans more than four decades of work across mainstream superhero titles and creator-owned crime fiction. He broke into the industry in 1982, still in his teens, and built early experience on titles including DC Comics' Hellblazer and WildC.A.T.s, developing a moody, shadow-heavy visual style well suited to darker material.
7 Psychopaths #[nn] (2010)
Phillips found his most enduring creative partnership with writer Ed Brubaker, and together they have produced some of the most critically admired crime and noir comics of their era. Their collaborations include Sleeper, Incognito, the long-running Criminal series, Fatale, The Fade Out, and Kill or Be Killed — a body of work that consistently draws on pulp and noir traditions while maintaining genuine emotional weight. Phillips has served not only as artist on many of these projects but has also taken on coloring, inking, lettering, and occasional writing duties across nearly 500 credited issues.
28 Days Later #5 (2011)
His versatility and consistency have made him one of the more quietly indispensable figures in contemporary comics. Among his earlier credits, Hellblazer stands as one of his most-associated single titles. Phillips continues to work actively with Brubaker, and their partnership remains a benchmark for sustained, high-quality creator-owned collaboration in the medium.
