Arak et Satyricus arrivent à Byzance où le général Cometas leur obtient une audience auprès de l'empereur Constantin. Valda fait irruption dans la pièce et Constantine, impressionné, annonce qu'elle sera son épouse ! Pour la sauver, Arak doit combattre une bête aquatique. Arak rencontre Haakon le barbare, venu à Byzance pour obtenir le secret du feu grégeois. L'impératrice Irène est trahie par son vizir qu'Arak doit tuer. Haakon parvient à s'enfuir avec l'inventeur de l'arme. Arak doit promettre à Irene de le sauver. Arak, Satyricus et Valda sont rejoints par Johannes dans leur quête.
