"Unwed Mother" in Dear Lonely Hearts #7 (1954) tells the poignant story of high school student Lynn, who marries Danny only to discover he’s already married, leaving her to raise their child alone. After moving to a new town to finish school, Lynn faces harsh judgment from her peers—until teacher Barry’s younger brother Jack steps in to help her fit in. As graduation nears, Lynn learns Jack was engaged to Sally all along, and that their kindness was part of a quiet plan. The issue, drawn with heartfelt detail by Marty Elkin, explores isolation, compassion, and the fragile hope of connection.

High school student Lynn marries Danny and becomes pregnant, then learns he has a wife elsewhere. Lynn has the baby and moves with her parents to another town, where she will finish high school. However, her story comes out and she is a social pariah with the other students. Teacher Barry suggests Lynn date his younger brother Jack, and this breaks the ice. Lynn becomes popular. When she graduates, Lynn discovers Jack is already engaged to Sally, and they had agreed to help her. Barry says he loves Lynn and now that she’s no longer a student, they can be together.
