First Love Illustrated #21
In "I Sinned Against Love," young Laurie finds herself caught between loneliness and longing as she dates Bill not out of affection, but to soak in the warmth of his close-knit family—something she’s missing at home. When neighbors misinterpret their relationship, Laurie’s confession about using Bill sparks a quiet moment of self-realization, leading to a heartfelt reckoning with her feelings. Bob Powell’s expressive art brings emotional depth to this touching 1952 tale, while Al Avison’s cover captures its bittersweet tension.

Laurie’s parents are too busy to give her love and affection. Even though she doesn’t love fellow student Bill, she continues to date him because he has a close-knit family and she basks in that atmosphere. When nosy neighbors think Laurie and Bill are “misbehaving,” Laurie confesses that she’s been “using” Bill so she could enjoy his family—but then realizes she actually does love him after all. Bill chastises Laurie’s parents for their neglect, but everything is happily resolved and Bill and Laurie become engaged.
