Jeff and Laurie are fellow art students, although Jeff is irresponsible and his older brother Steve doesn’t think he’s serious about his studies. Laurie takes a part-time job in a department store when Jeff squanders his inheritance money, then discovers Jeff is cheating on her with Margo. They argue and Jeff falls out of a window and is left paralyzed. Steve and Laurie take the bitter Jeff to Steve’s ranch. When Steve and Laurie fall in love, Jeff tries to shoot them but mortally wounds himself instead.
