“Loveless”

"Loveless" in First Love Illustrated #42 (1954) is a tender, quietly poignant tale of young love and self-discovery, anchored by the heartfelt performances of orphan Lois and the man she’s drawn to—Bob. Written and illustrated with delicate precision by John Prentice, the story unfolds with a gentle realism, capturing the awkward hopes and quiet heartaches of adolescence. The emotionally resonant cover by Lee Elias perfectly frames the moment of revelation, where love, once thought impossible, finally finds its way.

Orphan Lois is raised by her spinster Aunt Anna. Due to the “man-shortage,” she can’t find romance. She dates Bert but he vanishes when she presses for a marriage proposal, and the same thing happens when her friend Stella sets her up with George. Stella moves away and asks Lois to escort her fiancé Bob around town. Lois and Bob fall in love but Lois feels she’s betraying Stella. However, Stella admits it was just a trick to make Lois act naturally around Bob: Stella is engaged to Hank. Lois and Bob will wed.
