Urged by her parents and fiancé Lamont, Ellen accepts an invitation to spend the summer on her rich uncle Edgar’s estate. They hope she’ll be made Edgar’s heir. Over her stern uncle’s warning, she falls in love with Hal, a college student working as the gardener. Ellen says they must hide their relationship so she won’t lose Edgar’s money. Because her uncle likes Lamont, Ellen can’t break up with him either, so Hal dumps her. Lamont finds out about Hal but doesn’t care, as long as Ellen shares the fortune with him. Ellen confesses to her uncle, is disinherited, but will marry Hal.
