First Romance Magazine #38
In "Clinging Vine," a 1956 romance gem from Harvey, common-sense Lois finds herself torn between her ideals and her heart when she meets the free-spirited beachcomber Dan during a trip to Hawaii. Torn by her upbringing and her growing feelings, she challenges him to choose between her and his carefree life—only to later realize her father’s advice might be the wisest of all. Penciled and inked by Bob Powell, with lettering by Joe Rosen, the story unfolds with quiet emotional weight, while Al Avison’s cover captures the bittersweet tension of the moment.

“Common-sense” Lois wants a husband who is “rich and reliable!” On a trip to Hawaii, she meets beachcomber Dan and they are attracted to each other, but she tells him “I’ve always been taught to hate shiftlessness---irresponsibility!” She urges him to get a job: “You’ve got to decide between me and your way of life! You can’t have both!” “You love only the dollar sign,” he replies, and they break up. Her father advises her to “follow your heart,” and Lois returns to Dan.
