“Dummies”

In "Dummies," Fred the Clown heads to Mugwhump's Theatre for a job offer, only to find his ventriloquist dummy suddenly spouting bitter remarks as they travel. Heartbroken, Fred abandons the dummy on the road, but when he reaches the theatre, he turns back—only to discover it’s vanished. Written and illustrated by Roger Langridge, this 2002 issue from Hotel Fred Press blends melancholy and surreal humor in a story that lingers long after the final page. The cover, also by Langridge, captures the eerie stillness of a moment just before everything unravels.
