G.I. Joe, a Real American Hero #33
In "Celebration!", the G.I. Joe team takes a rare break from duty when Rip-Cord and Blowtorch escort Spirit to the mall—only to stumble upon a surprising reunion with Fred II, who Spirit insists is the original Fred I. Meanwhile, Destro confronts the Baroness with a shocking revelation, and a long-hidden truth about Billy’s parentage throws a wrench into Cobra’s plans. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Frank Springer, with inks by Andy Mushynsky and colors by George Roussos, this 1985 issue marks a pivotal moment in the Joe ranks as eight original members are promoted and Duke assumes full field command—while Hawk rises to become Full Commander and the new head of the Pit. The cover, by Mike Zeck and John Beatty, captures the tension and camaraderie of the moment.

Rip-Cord and Blowtorch take Spirit to the mall where they run across Fred II (Spirit believing he is Fred I) having an outing with his new family. Destro shows the Baroness his true face, and stops the plot to have Billy kill Cobra Commander by revealing that Billy is the Commander's son. Eight of the original Joes (except Snake-Eyes) are promoted to administration and Duke becomes full field commander, as Hawk is promoted to Full Commander and the Pit's commanding officer.
