“A Little Stranger!”

"A Little Stranger!" kicks off with a chilling twist on space travel: astronauts are being quick-frozen to survive launch acceleration, but when Commander Lon secretly smuggles his mistress Edith aboard, a clumsy fall during thawing sends shockwaves through the mission. Written by Al Feldstein and illustrated by Jack Kamen, with vibrant colors by Marie Severin and sharp lettering by Jim Wroten, this 1991 Haunt of Fear #1 delivers a tense, eerie tale of love, deception, and the cold consequences of freezing a secret. The cover by Graham Ingels captures the story’s unsettling mood with his signature gothic flair.

Space travel is being held up by one big problem: living creatures can't seem to survive the rapid acceleration required for takeoff. Then, they hit upon the idea of "quick-freezing" astronauts and thawing them out once they're underway. As the first mission approaches, the commander of the mission, Lon, plans to bring his mistress, Edith, with him by freezing her and hiding her on the ship prior to takeoff. The plan works and, as the ship flies through space, Lon pulls frozen, brittle Edith from her hiding place and begins to carry her to the "thawer". Then, he trips and drops her. Big mess.
