In the city of Shadizar, Conan is drawn into a perilous journey when Khassek of Iranistan seeks his aid in delivering the mystical Eye of Erlik to his king. Along the way, he faces the deadly allure of Isparana, who turns on Khassek and ensnares Conan in her web. Meanwhile, back in Zamboula, the sorcerer Zafra gifts Akter Khan an enchanted sword, a weapon that will soon claim the life of a young woman from the Shanki people.

Conan and Isparana journey to Zamboula to deliver the Eye of Erlik to Akter Khan, but their path is cut short by Yogite assassins—saved only by the enigmatic Shanki, whose princess Derketari has died under strange circumstances. When Akter Khan attempts to kill Conan and imprisons Isparana, the Cimmerian allies with the exiled nobleman Balad, whose claim to the throne may be the only hope of survival.
