Hi-School Romance #43
"Hidden Heartbreak" in Hi-School Romance #43 (1955) captures a quiet moment of growing tension in the charming town of Parkville, where Judy Dunn’s seemingly perfect romance with Lee Sanders begins to shift with the arrival of Peter Byrnes, a thoughtful historian with a quiet presence. As Judy finds herself drawn to Peter’s calm demeanor and unexpected sincerity, her feelings stir in ways she doesn’t fully understand—especially when a night at a dance reveals just how different their worlds really are. With Jack Sparling handling both art and inks, and Al Avison’s cover capturing the story’s bittersweet mood, this issue offers a tender, observant look at first love’s quiet turning points.

Parkville was a quaint New England town full of history. The romance between Judy Dunn and Lee Sanders was perfect until Peter Byrnes arrived to write a book on the town's history. Peter was different from Lee; he was quieter, calmer but also much older. Judy was initially impressed that he found her so attractive but soon had stronger feelings, even though her friends made fun of her dating "the old bookworm". Trying to please her, Peter took Judy to a dance but left when he found the music too loud. At first Judy stays but when she realizes that Peter is "the one" she runs after him.
