Shortly before he dies, an impoverished stranger asks church members whether they have ever truly sacrificed to live as Jesus would have done. Reverend Maxwell asks volunteers to join him in his new commitment: to live for one year just as Jesus would have, not doing anything before asking, "What would Jesus do?" A small group joins him, and most follow through, though in a few cases it leads to poverty or even death. Their community is changed for the better, and there seems no hint of ending the experiment with the end of the year. In fact, others join them.
