“I Want Him Back”

In "I Want Him Back," Jane Sloan—determined to avoid the fate of her widowed mother—navigates her new life as a college graduate working as a secretary. When she begins a relationship with account executive Ken Travers, her fears about marriage and motherhood are tested, especially after learning he’s a widower with a young son. The emotional core of the story lies in their struggle to reconcile love with personal conviction, all drawn with quiet intensity by Valerie Barclay.

Jane Sloan vows not to marry, remembering her care-worn (widowed?) mother. She gets a job as a secretary after college. She is tempted by account executive Ken Travers, but tells him she doesn’t want to become a downtrodden wife like her mother. They fall in love anyway. Jane discovers Ken is a widower with a young son; Ken says her insistence on avoiding becoming a wife and mother makes her unattractive to him (even though she likes his little boy). They reconcile when Ken’s son says Jane treated him lovingly.
