“Come Back, My Darling”

"Come Back, My Darling" is a poignant 1953 tale from Intimate Love #23, where Lisa’s fragile hope for love after loss is tested when she finds herself drawn to poet Carl—only to face his harsh belief that a widow can never love again. Vince Colletta’s expressive art brings emotional weight to this quiet, heartfelt story of grief, memory, and the fragile courage it takes to begin anew.

Lisa convinces Bill to marry her before he’s deployed overseas for “occupation duty.” After he’s killed in an accident, Lisa moves to New York. She and poet Carl fall in love, but he says his mother “was widowed very young but she was always true to my father’s memory!” Lisa is afraid to tell Carl she’s a widow. When she finally does, he rejects her: “a woman can love only once in a lifetime! If you loved Bill, you can’t love me!” Carl’s mother says she loved two men in her life, and Carl changes his mind. Lisa knows Mrs. Lerner lied for her sake.
