Lisa convinces Bill to marry her before he’s deployed overseas for “occupation duty.” After he’s killed in an accident, Lisa moves to New York. She and poet Carl fall in love, but he says his mother “was widowed very young but she was always true to my father’s memory!” Lisa is afraid to tell Carl she’s a widow. When she finally does, he rejects her: “a woman can love only once in a lifetime! If you loved Bill, you can’t love me!” Carl’s mother says she loved two men in her life, and Carl changes his mind. Lisa knows Mrs. Lerner lied for her sake.
