“No Faith Had I”

In "No Faith Had I," bookkeeper Nell’s longing for style leads her down a risky path when she starts betting to afford a new hat—only to have her first luxury purchase ruined by Jon Temple, a wealthy fashion designer who soon becomes her romantic interest. As Nell struggles to maintain appearances, her gambling spirals into debt, testing her resolve and her job, while Jon’s affection remains unchanged. A quiet, character-driven story drawn by Mike Sekowsky, this 1950 issue captures the tension between desire and dignity with emotional honesty.

Bookkeeper Nell can’t afford the fashionable clothes she craves. Coworker Ethel says she’s been buying clothes and furs with money she’s made betting. Nell places a bet, wins, and buys a fancy hat with the money, only to have her new acquisition accidentally ruined by Jon Temple. Jon is a wealthy fashion designer and they begin a romance. To keep up appearances, Nell continues to gamble and has to take out loans to cover her losses. She narrowly avoids losing her job and vows to never gamble again. Jon, however, still loves her regardless of how much her dresses cost.
