Josie #40
In "Foot-Loose and Fancy," Josie and the Pussycats find themselves caught in a wave of student rebellion when Clyde Didit’s laid-back, shoeless style inspires Melody to go full hippie—much to the dismay of the school’s strict Mr. Tuttle. With the chemistry lab in ruins from a mishap involving Pepper and Sock, the class takes refuge at Alex’s mansion, only for chaos to follow when Josie and Alex accidentally plow a snow plow through the house during a study session. Written by Frank Doyle and brought to life with Dan DeCarlo’s signature charm—penciled and inked by DeCarlo and Rudy Lapick, with lettering by Bill Yoshida—this 1969 issue captures a quirky, memorable moment in Archie’s teen comedy legacy.

Clyde Didit's hippie style inspires Melody to imitate his fashion choices and lack of shoes. Mr. Tuttle figures out a way to curb this outbreak of nonconformism without risking violence. Violence ensues anyway when Pepper and Sock accidentally blow up the chemistry lab, filling the school with tear gas. Alex offers the use of his mansion while the school is being aired out, but while the other students are using Mr. Cabot's indoor swimming pool as study hall, Alex and Josie drive a snow plow right into the house.
